The Truth About Bipolar Disorder and Drug Rehabilitation Programs
Most people in need of
drug and alcohol rehabilitation could be stuffed into
the category of having biplar disorder as a dual diagnosis at one point or
another. That's the flaw in trying to diagnose someone who does have an alcohol
or other drug problem - the very nature of their behavior has extreme highs and
lows.
'For example, if someone were on a stimulant such as cocaine, crack, methamphetamine or a prescription such as Ritalin or Adderall, they will have the highs and periods of extra activity, and then when you come down off the drug there will be a period lasting several days or more of extreme lows. This is a normal pattern of drug use and should not be considered a mental disorder such as bipolar or manic depression.

Another common misdiagnosis with addicts is the co-occuring disorder of having major depression and substance abuse. However, with alcohol, or opiates such as methadone, heroin and prescription painkillers, the drugs are supposed to make people depressed. Alcohol is a depressant. Opioids slow down the functioning of the body and depress it in that manner as well.
This is not meant to be any type of diagnosis, but rather an observation from working with thousands of people throughout the country over the years and seeing what works and what doesn't. To date, we have not found a single person who has been diagnosed with one of these disorders and been put on drugs to treat them at a rehab center and remain to be clean, sober and symptom-free. Many of the drugs used to treat bipolar and depression actually cause a worsening of symptoms and can create a higher incidence of relapse.
A successful treatment facility will work to help the addicted individual become completely free of drugs and alcohol. If a rehab center tries to put you or your loved one on some type of substitute drug or medication, then they are telling you that you cannot be fixed and that you must take drugs to treat the symptoms - which is a lie. You can be rehabilitated.
